Gottlob Frege (1848-1925) is most celebrated today for his contributions to mathematical logic and the philosophy of language. The first section below considers why a philosophical investigation of language mattered at all for Frege, the mathematician, and why it should have mattered to him.
Sam, then, means a person in the world who is named Sam. Section 1 discusses Frege’s view that the task of logic is to provide justification for what we think, and in sections 2 and 3 this idea is shown to play a central role in( )his anti-psychologistic view that logic is normative for thinking. Section 4 offers a survey of Frege’s manifold conception of thinking. There Frege argues, against Kant, that the truths of arithmetic are not based on intuition but are analytic a priori, and that logic can in fact extend our knowledge. 2020-11-19 · Thus, Frege’s puzzle: we have reasons both for and against identifying the meaning of a name with its referent.
